Inveraray lies on the beautiful banks
of Loch Fyne, along the A83. Your first and lasting
impression is the picturesque line of predominately white
buildings on your approach to this buzzing wee town.
You'll find a good selection of unique shops, restaurants and
visitor attractions. Inveraray was built on the site of an
earlier fishing village in the mid 1700s by the 3rd Duke of
Argyll, chief of the Clan Campbell. He demolished the
original village to give his rebuilt castle more space, and
rehoused the population in a new village that is one of the most
attractive in Scotland.
Today's Inveraray Castle is a remarkable and unique piece of
architecture incorporating Baroque, Palladian and Gothic.
It is open to the public and boasts interiors every bit as
magnificent and its exteriors, plus a superb collection of
furniture and art and a huge arsenal of weaponry including the
dirk, the traditional highland dagger, used by Rob Roy.
Other key places to visit ... Inveraray Jail - a fun yet
gruesome experience for the whole family and 'The Vital Spark'
which along with the Arctic Penguin, forms the Maritime Museum.
